THE GORGE TRAIL

This October Mountain trail’s name is attributed to Herman Melville, who loved seeing its burst of fall colors. The Gorge Trail follows along both sides of the Schermerhorn Gorge’s cascading waterfalls and swirling pools. This loop climbs steeply at times up to secluded Felton Lake, where you can see the clouds reflected in the placid water. As the summer transitions to autumn, a cornucopia of mushrooms sprouts along the trail. 135 MIN

BURBANK TRAIL

This is an invigorating hike among the canopied forest full of lush Berkshire greenery, with two sensational views. The gradual yet challenging climb intersects with Monk’s Pond, where you can take a moment to pause, reconnect with your breath, and embrace the remainder of the ascent. Patches of rock slabs and boulders lead the way to the first vista overlooking Parson’s Marsh and Undermountain Farm, while the second view appears on the descent. This is an intermediate hike with diverse terrain and slippery conditions when wet. 165 MIN

FLAG ROCK HIKE

A local favorite, this hike offers a gradual, steady climb with some nice level sections. Enjoy wild woodlands of oaks and maples giving way to pines and massive boulders in a valley between Monument Mountain and Flag Rock. The final ascent brings you up to a rocky outcropping, where you stand under an American Flag looking down on the quaint town of Housatonic. Monument Mountain Hike

Monument Mountain has inspired poets, novelists, and painters for almost two centuries. MT. WILCOX

Hike northbound along the Appalachian Trail (AT) through new growth trees healing the area that was deforested from a rare F4 tornado in 1995. As the AT climbs back into the untouched hardwoods, it arrives at the water's edge of tranquil Benedict Pond, tucked away in Beartown State Forest. From here, the final ascent is a rocky scramble that leads to a bridge-crossing at the top of a ravine. The trail skirts along a cliffside through trees on Mount Wilcox to an opening with excellent southwest views of the Butternut Ski Area and hills of Connecticut. 225 MIN | $79

TRAIL OF THE LEDGES

In the first mile, scramble up and over fun and challenging steep ledges. Once you conquer the ledges section, continue up to the fire tower at the summit of Lenox Mountain, looking over Richmond Pond and Bartlett's Orchard below.
